The Anatomy of a Roller Coaster Essay -- Amusement Parks Rides Essays
The Anatomy of a Roller Coaster To adequately understand the relationship between physics and roller coasters, it is essential to first describe and explain the basic structure of roller coasters. In simple terms, a roller coaster is much like that of a passenger train. To explain, a roller coaster consists of a series of connected cars that move on tracks. However, unlike a train, a roller coaster has no engine, or rather a power source of its own. There are two major types of roller coasters, characterized mainly by their track structure. The tracks of wooden roller coasters are similar to those of traditional railroad tracks, as metal wheels of the roller coaster roll on a flat metal strip that is bolted to a sturdy running track made of laminated wood (How Roller Coasters Work). A majority of wooden roller coasters have the same wheel design as that of a train, where the inner part of the wheel has a wide lip that prevents the car from rolling off the side of the track. Additionally, wooden roller coasters also have another set of wheels that run underneath the track, keeping the cars from flying up into the air. Wooden coaster tracks are braced by wooden crossties and diagonal support beams; the entire track structure rests on an intricate lattice of wooden or steel beams (How Roller Coasters Work). With the wooden roller coaster structure, designers can combine hills, twists, and turns into an infinite variety of course la youts. In wooden roller coasters, however, the exhilarating motion is mainly up and down. The second type of major roller coaster, based on tubular steel tracks, was introduced in the 1950s. In review, in relation to the anatomy, basic workings, and sensations found in roller coasters, physics definitely plays a critical role. More specifically, without the laws of physics, or rather the incorporation of physics, roller coasters would be unknown to the world of entertainment. With the incorporation of physics, roller coaster designers have been able to create better, faster, and more unimaginable thrills with complete accuracy and safety. As mentioned previously, although physics is found in essentially every facet of life, I would like to believe that the majority of entertainment-seeking enthusiasts are grateful that the application of physics isnââ¬â¢t simply restricted to the classroom. Student Achievement Essay -- Education Class Size School Essays
Student Achievement This is a research paper I did to see if class size is related to student achievement. I used two studies to see if class size was related to student achievement. When you read my paper you will gain the knowledge of how controversial this issue is. It shows the actual findings of two studies. My paper shows how younger kids are benefiting from the smaller classes. There is still ongoing research to really decide if smaller really is better. Many parents and teachers desire smaller classes for their children. However, are smaller classes necessarily increasing student achievement? It has been an assumption that if a student is in a small class setting, there are fewer distractions and the learning experience is greater. People feel children have more individualized attention, which may lead young students towards greater academic success. Research has been conducted across the country to see if smaller class size is really better. The number of students in a classroom recently became a controversial issue. There has been research that shows that class size depends on many variables. Some of these variables include the age level of students, subject matter taught, and instructional methods used. ââ¬Å"Recent statistical syntheses of this research reveal that the instructional benefits of smaller classes are most significant for classes numbering under twenty students; in those with twenty five to forty students class size has little overall effect on educational qualityâ⬠(Ellis, 1984, p.1). The benefits of a smaller class include increased one-on-one learning between the student and the teacher. This also allows the teacher to ascertain a studentââ¬â¢s learning ability. If there are fewer stude... ..., Smith, P, Zahorik, J, Halbach, A, Ehrle, K, Hoffman, L, & Cross, B. Page 1 James Earl Carter Jr. was a unique president not because of everything he has done as a president, but because of things he has done after his presidency. He has emerged as a champion of human rights and worked for charitable causes. Carter worked with Habitat for Humanity International, an organization that works worldwide to provide housing for underprivileged people. Carter has served as a freelance ambassador for a variety of international missions, including soothing disputes between countries, observing elections in nations with histories of fraudulent voting processes, and advising presidents on Middle East issues. These are things that have set Jimmy Carter apart from all the presidents that the United States has had. During Carters presidency he also faced something that we were not easy for him. Carter could point to a number of achievements in domestic affairs. He dealt with the energy shortage by establishing a national energy policy and by decontrolling domestic petroleum prices to stimulate production. He prompted Government efficiency through civil s...

Mary Street by Peter Skrzynecki Essay
He emigrated to Australia in 1949 with his parents. Most of Skrzyneckiââ¬â¢s poems are about his life and the change that he has experienced from moving to a different country. In 1951 the family moved to Sydney, to the working-class suburb of Regents Park, where a home had been purchased at 10 Mary Street. The poem ââ¬Å"10 Mary Streetâ⬠represents change as it shows the comparison between Skrzyneckiââ¬â¢s life in Poland and his new life in Sydney and how he and his family have had to adapted to their new way of life and how the physical change of moving countries has changed them emotionally. Change is present in this poem as the poet uses the simile ââ¬Å"Shut the house; like a well-oiled lockâ⬠to appreciate the order of daily ritual when departing in the morning. It indicates that the house is secure and protects the family. The simile ââ¬Å"like adopted childrenâ⬠shows that the garden is not like any other garden to them. The language techniques that Skrzynecki uses in this poem are used to great effect and create a level of connection between the reader and Skrzyneckiââ¬â¢s and how his life was. Some of the techniques used are: Similies: A simile is a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another of a different kind, as an illustration or ornament, the effect that a simile has in a poem is that it paints a picture in our minds as a simile is a descriptive set of words e. g. ââ¬Å"And smoked like a dozen Puffing Billiesâ⬠Personification: A figure of speech that gives human qualities to abstract ideas, animals, and inanimate objects. It affects the reader by creating empathy, and allows the reader to associate with the poem and the message in it e. g. ââ¬Å"In its china blue coatââ¬
The Adoration of Jenna Fox
The Adoration of Jenna Fox- Essay Would your conscience be clear knowing that you illegally modified someone to save their life? This choice was made by parents Claire and Mathew Fox. The Adoration of Jenna Fox tells the story of a parentââ¬â¢s hard decision to genetically modify their daughter Jenna with BioGel. With this major decision, comes many side effects, including the loss of most her memory, therefore she questions what it is to be human. This essay discusses the effect on not only Jenna, but her parents, her grandmother Lily and her new friend Allys.Jenna develops anger towards her parents, not for their decision to her modify, but the fact they lied to her. In Details (130), Jenna asks her parents ââ¬Å"Why didnââ¬â¢t you tell me? The minute I woke up? Didnââ¬â¢t I deserve to know? â⬠This series of short rhetorical questions release a lot of Jennaââ¬â¢s feelings of being confused and angry. She also answers her own questions because she doesnââ¬â¢t w ant to hear the answer. When her parents wonââ¬â¢t discuss what happened, Jenna starts digging to find answers. In Denied (134), Jenna says: ââ¬Å"The pieces speak, but there are not enough.Yetâ⬠Jenna says this to herself to reassure her that she will eventually belong in society. This line also contains hidden meanings including the fact that she cannot understand the events that occurred. Similarly, the line; ââ¬Å"Uploaded? You uploaded my brain? â⬠(Father -117) also uses rhetorical questions. The use of the word ââ¬Å"youâ⬠once again, shows her anger towards her parents in a direct manner. It makes them feel bad for their lies and the secrets they kept, therefore Jenna starts to question humanity and what are human qualities.Throughout the book, Jenna questions whether her parentsââ¬â¢ decision was right or wrong- not legally, but morally. She constantly asks herself whether the choice to modify her was for her or her parentsââ¬â¢ benefit, or whethe r she was just a lab pet for her fatherââ¬â¢s experiments. In Lily (126), Lily and Jenna have one of their first real conversations; ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢I said good-bye. I grieved. Then a few hours later, your parents told me what they had done. ââ¬â¢ ââ¬â¢And you thought it was wrong? ââ¬â¢ ââ¬â¢Iââ¬â¢m not like your parents.I think there are worse things than dying. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ Jenna is very surprised of Lilyââ¬â¢s honesty and starts to appreciate their relationship. Lily is obviously against the Foxââ¬â¢s decision to modify Jenna and believes that Jenna has the right to know. This leaves Jenna to believe that her parentsââ¬â¢ decision was for their benefit only. As Lily and Jennaââ¬â¢s relationship strengthens, Jenna is more open to listen to Lilyââ¬â¢s onion and what she has to say. One example of this is from The Greenhouse (142). ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢Iââ¬â¢m sorry,ââ¬â¢ she says. But Iââ¬â¢m not sorry I told you. It just isnââ¬â¢t right. à ¢â¬â¢Ã¢â¬ This is another example of the Foxââ¬â¢s wrong decisions and how Lily and Jennaââ¬â¢s relationship tightens. By this time, Jenna becomes certain that modifying her was for her parentsââ¬â¢ benefit and in Control; Jenna confronts her parents to find they are only making excuses. Another bad choice is expressed in Backup (189). ââ¬ËI know, Fatherââ¬â¢. I sit down in the chair opposite him. ââ¬ËThereââ¬â¢s those three people in the closet, too. Now thatââ¬â¢s what I call a disability. â⬠Jenna says this in a sarcastic way. This is when Jenna starts to build anger towards her parents because they are continuing to lie and make excuses. She is at the point where she doesnââ¬â¢t trust her parents and believes that have done everything wrong. Jenna starts to take action against her parents in A Plan (239), and with the help of Lily, they free the minds of Kara, Locke and herself. By this time, Jenna believes that Claire and Mathew have broken any relationship they ever had with her. With the Foxââ¬â¢s decision, they didnââ¬â¢t hesitate to break the law to save their daughter- but at what consequences. An example of this is in Father (121). ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m illegal arenââ¬â¢t I? Thatââ¬â¢s why we live here. Weââ¬â¢re hiding outâ⬠. Jenna questions bio-medical ethics and the nature of the soul. She not only questions whether bio-engineering legally right, but morally. As soon as Jennaââ¬â¢s parentsââ¬â¢ modified her, they pushed their relationship. In Day One/ New Jenna, the following paragraph discusses moral ethics. ââ¬Å"Does that make you an authority on everything? What about a soul, Father? When you were busy implanting all your neural chips, did you think about that? Did you snip my soul from my old body too? Where did you put it? Show me! Where? Where in all this groundbreaking technology did you insert my soul? â⬠This shows one of the consequences of her parentsââ¬â¢ decision. Jen na hates them for lying and their choice to modify her. She starts to realise that thereââ¬â¢s more to being human and that the choice to engineer her has taken away all humanity within.Similarly, the line; ââ¬Å"At least with the FSEBââ¬â¢s current point system in place, right? â⬠(Viewpoint 200) expresses Allysââ¬â¢ view towards bio-engineering. Both Allys and Jenna question whether the FSEB can regulate humanity and whether it considers emotions from the soul. In conclusion, Claire and Mathew Foxââ¬â¢s decision to modify Jenna had many consequences including the destruction of relationships. Jenna believes that her modification was only for her parentsââ¬â¢ benefit and it was humanely wrong. This is expressed through Jenna, Lily, Allys and Claire and Mathew Fox.

Prison Reform Essay
Three inmates could be released from prison today. Two of them will end up right back in the system within three years. This statistic should be enough to conclude that Americaââ¬â¢s prison systems are failing miserably with the rehabilitation of inmates. How is it plausible for every correctional facility to think isolation, segregation, and overcrowding could possibly benefit the crime rate? Instead of converting these inmates into proper citizens, the system has found ways to hold them down. To suppress their inspiration to change. For many inmates, those bars do not only imprison their bodies, but their motivation and determination as well. US prisons are breeding grounds for violence. These places are supposed to reform inmates into law abiding people. Instead, they turn even the harmless criminals into the most violent ones. One man is sentenced to one year due to drug trafficking. Another man is sentenced to life without parole for several brutal murders. Despite the different levels of their crimes, they could possibly be bunked together in the same cell. This right here is a prime example of what the DOC will do to hold an inmate down. By involving non-violent criminals with heinous ones, they are creating a situation of fear and defense. The man who is in for excruciating violent behavior could easily try to hurt his cell mate. He has nothing to lose. Is the man with minor charges expected to not defend himself? No. Thatââ¬â¢s where the violence sets in. When you mix completely different criminals together on purpose, there is going to be an outbreak of violence. Everybody has those weeks where you just feel like you need to get out of the house. As if staying home doing nothing one more day would just make you rip your hair out. Imagine having to do that for anywhere up to six months or longer. Not just in a wide open house, but in a small, confined cell. No human contact, nothing to keep you busy, sometimes even going hours wi thout food. This happens daily in the American prison systems. Solitary confinement has been a method used for years in the US. Such isolation can take a huge toll on anybodyââ¬â¢s mental stability. Often these inmates are thrown into a single cell, and basically forgotten about. These prisoners are treated like dogs instead of human beings. Do these officers realize that each one of those men have someone who cares about them? For every inmate in that facility there is someone who loves them. Another flaw of the DOC is the hiring process of correctional staff. I have a great deal of thanks for those whoà have put their safety on the line to control inmates. However, I also believe they have much to do with the violent outbreaks. For some officers, this position is like a power trip. While there are many honorable officers, you can tell they love the future of the inmates riding in their hands. I have witnessed first hand COââ¬â¢s getting inmates all wired up knowing the inmate will get themselves in trouble. Often these officers act just as childish as the prisoners! The only difference is the uniforms theyââ¬â¢re wearing. The requirements to become a correctional officer is to provide security and to enforce the rules, not to contribute to the chaos! As a new inmate entering the system, there is one factor that everybody recognizes about youâ⬠¦The color of your skin. Instead of providing a place where segregation is at a minimum, prisons all across America are dealing with gang violence and race issues. These issues are known as ââ¬Å"Prison Politicsâ⬠to some. No matter who you are, or where youââ¬â¢re from, when entering prison you become identified by your skin tone. The level of gangs and cultural groups are so high, that often inmates have no choice but to follow the crowd. Sure, they could choose not to cooperate in the gang life, but where does that leave them? Then they will become the targets with no defense. The pressure to become accepted is so important in prison survival, that some inmates will throw away their moral s just to protect themselves. Prison officials often condone the promotion of racial segregation. If one person of a specific race was found suspicious, they have the right to lock down every person of the same nationality. They often bunk same races together to cut down the risk of altercations. This is probably for the best at the time being, but it makes you wonder why they donââ¬â¢t attempt to do something about gang involvement. You hear about classes on drug intervention, schooling, and religion. Why donââ¬â¢t they have a class on racial acceptance? Iââ¬â¢m sure it wouldnââ¬â¢t convert the beliefs of many inmates, but it would at least show some effort to bring down the segregation rate. The release of an inmate should be one of the most exciting moments of their lives. It should be a time where they finally get to put all of the knowledge and inspiration they have gained to use. It should be a new stepping stone for them to create a new lifestyle without their past lagging behind them. Sadly, this is hardly ever how it works out. In the past generation, the process of parole and release has started lacking structure. It is very rare that an inmate isà individually prepared to face the real world. Instead of carefully considering ways to provide help upon release, they often just let them go on their own with no support from the inside. I understand these are grown adults, but when you are facilitated for so long, there is a need for preparation for the outside world. When these inmates are faced with the outside realities all at once, they just go back to their old ways. They are not given the support they need to make it through life on their own. These prisons confine these inmates for years, harboring their every move. Yet when they are released, they do not help them along one bit. Something is obviously wrong here. The prison system has a long way to go before it becomes effective. More people need to start paying attention to these correctional departments. The cause seems so minuscule until someone you love becomes the victim. These prisons are inhumane, chaotic, and lacking necessary resources. Until prison systems of America reach a solid stability of rehabilitation, the inmates will continue to involve themselves in crime. These places should be for improvement, not corruption.
